That now classic 90’s sitcom, Seinfeld, the self-labeled “show about nothing,” is finally on its way to online streaming availability. The only thing is, don’t bet on watching it on Netflix. Sony Pictures, the studio responsible for the Jerry Seinfeld-starring show, is said to be starting talks on licensing the rights for streaming. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, Netflix is not interested in joining negotiations. This means you’ll likely need to be a subscriber to Hulu, Amazon, or Yahoo’s services if you’re eager to stream some Kramer.
The WSJ notes that Netflix showed an interest in adding Seinfeld to its library last year, however a deal with Sony never worked out. But in the last year, we’ve seen Netflix score big with original series like House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black, so they may be more interested in focusing on similar offerings than old sitcoms.
Plus, there’s the fact that Netflix’s licensing of Friends already cost them a large $500,000 per episode. Sony is said to be seeking an even higher price for Seinfeld, and with 180 episodes in the series, that’s cash Netflix could use to develop more originals.
On the other hand, this could be a great chance for Hulu or Amazon to strengthen their competition. Popular classics are known to attract new subscribers, and Seinfeld is pretty much one of the last big 90’s shows that can’t be found online in it its entirety (legally, that is).
