Cor, look at those shiny platters!  That's a damn sexy read/write head, too.  And that black & silver casing, I'm practically soaking wet at the sight of it.  All in all, Samsung's latest SpinPoint S166 hard-drive is a top piece of tech totty.  Great news is, all this beauty isn't just skin-deep; the S166 is a 3.5-inch, 7,200rpm Serial ATA slab of ultra-silent, ultra-speedy storage.

Using the latest incarnations of the company's SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies, which add up to a pleasantly quiet 24db idle mode and 27.5db seek mode (compared to an average of 28db and 32db respectively in competing models), as well as a variety of upgraded head-actuators, platter balancing and system-on-chip controller it all adds up to improvements in thermal output, disk data transfer speed and power consumption.

Three models will be available, all with SATA 3.0 Gbps interfaces, an 80GB model with 2MB buffer as well as 80GB and 120GB versions with 8MB buffers.  Prices will be released closer to the April launch.
