Samsung Galaxy J3 and J7 refreshes arrive this month

Samsung has a pair of new budget smartphones it's bringing to the US beginning later this month. These new phones will continue the Samsung J line of entry-level phones, and while they may not have spec sheets near the level of something like the Galaxy S9, they should still get the job done. Unfortunately for us, Samsung didn't really delve into specifics with today's announcement.

Still, it said enough to give us a basic idea of what to expect from the Galaxy J3 and J7. Samsung says that both phones focus on ticking a few key checkboxes – specifically, that means both phones will provide a decent display and capable cameras. Beyond that, though, it's probably best not to expect too much.

In the Galaxy J3, we'll receive a standard-sized smartphone with a 5-inch HD display. That Samsung doesn't use the phrase "Full HD" in describing this display suggests that it will output at 1280 x 720 resolution, and while that isn't great by today's standards, it should be sharp enough for most folks who just want a serviceable phone. The Galaxy J3 will also ship with "easy-to-use" 5MP front and 8MP rear cameras, along with Samsung's easy mode that simplifies the Android UI for someone who might just be getting going with smartphones.

If there's a more premium device between these two phones, it's the Galaxy J7. Here we see Samsung bump the front and rear-facing cameras up to 13MP sensors that apparently boast some low-light capabilities. Screen size, meanwhile jumps up to 5.5-inches, though it seems to keep the same resolution as the Galaxy J3. Finally, both phones will feature security from Samsung Knox and customer support through the Samsung+ app.

So, it sounds like both of these phones – and the Galaxy J3 in particular – will serve as a decent choice for someone's first smartphone, but beyond that, most Android lovers are probably going to want to look elsewhere. Full specification and pricing information isn't available just yet, but we can probably count on those arrive as we head toward launch later this month.
