Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay video sets the stage for grand adventure

We've seen enough about Red Dead Redemption 2 to know that it's a pretty ambitious title, but today, Rockstar gave us our deepest look yet. Rockstar published a six-minute long video today that not only sets the stage for the narrative told in Red Dead Redemption 2, but also introduces us to many of its mechanics as well. There's plenty of gameplay on display here, which is going to be exciting for anyone who has been waiting years for this follow-up.

We already know that Arthur Morgan will serve as the player character in this game, and that Red Dead Redemption 2 will center around his time with the Van der Linde Gang as it runs from US authorities. The gang's movement across the American frontier will be a major focus of the story, and the video you see below tells us that each time the gang moves location, they'll set up a new camp, which will serve as something of a base of operations for everyone.

Arthur Morgan is clearly a character who has no problem with conflict, but that doesn't necessarily mean you need to always take the dishonorable path as you play. The video details the various way Morgan can talk his way out of trouble or instigate the hotheaded people he comes across. It's pretty clear in telling us that actions have consequences throughout the game, which is precisely what we'd expect from an open world title like this.

Hunting and gathering was a pretty major part of the first game, and it sounds like it'll be a major part of the second as well. The things you find the wild, whether those are animal pelts or other items, can be sold at general stores to fund your adventure. Beyond that, it seems that Red Dead Redemption 2 will focus on the relationship between Arthur and his horse, which will become easier to control the more you bond with it.

There are plenty of other things the gameplay trailer covers, and the most exciting part is that this is only the first one. At the end, Rockstar says that the next one will focus on things like missions and specific combat mechanics, so we'll be looking forward to that. In the meantime, head down to the comments section and let us know what you think of our first real glimpse at Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay.
