PS4 system update "Yukimura" details revealed ahead of release

The Sony Playstation 4 is getting its latest software update, version 2.50 tomorrow. The system update, codenamed "Yukimura" offers a myriad of new features for enhanced game play and easier ways to connect with friends. Before you update your console, take a look at what's in store in the latest version of software for the PS4. The PS4 wants to be your destination console when it comes to playing video games with friends. Taking a lead from Twitter, verified accounts will be available to game developers and industry insiders.

Sony must realize that not all PS4 players have hours to spend binge-playing games. For those of us who fit in a few kill shots between daily tasks, a new Suspend/Resume feature will finally allow you to pick up where you left off on in your gameplay by just a tap of the PS button.

A large part of this update revolves around social media engagement, making it easier than ever to play with friends. You'll be able to connect with Facebook friends, and the new "Friends Who Play This" tool will allow you to not only see who's online but also what game they are playing. If you have that game, you can jump right in and join them! Merging social connectivity with game play, you will be able to directly upload videos to Dailymotion.

As for accessibility, Yukimura adds the ability to customize button assignments, zoom in on displayed pictures, convert text to speech, and enlarge text. You can also save your user data along with games and videos to a USB, and you can also retrieve saved data from a USB, allowing you to take games, screenshots, and videos to any other PS4 for instant gameplay.

We know all of the benefits this update will bring us, but sometimes Sony sneaks in digital rights management (DRM) software into their updates, like when the Playstation 3 system update 3.10 installed DRM software that could detect Cinavia watermarks and disrupt playback of illegally downloaded movies. So, we may have to wait for user reports to see if there are any unwanted surprised that come with system update Yukimura.
