Pixel 2, 2 XL Preferred Care gets 6 month coverage extension

For customers who aren't satisfied with the manufacturer's warranty, Google offers an extended warranty called Preferred Care for its Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, and Pixelbook customers. The service costs $129 USD and gives device owners extended warranty coverage that lasts beyond the manufacturer's warranty, as well as priority service, accidental damage coverage, and a few other things.READ: Pixel 2, 2 XL Preferred Care will no longer have deductibles

Google faced a bunch of criticism with its latest flagship smartphones, though most of it centered around the larger Pixel 2 XL model. The issue prompted the company to extend the manufacturer's warranty from the original 1-year duration to a longer 2-year duration.

That didn't sit entirely well with Preferred Care customers, however, given that they had to pay to get that extra year of coverage. In response, Google eliminated deductibles for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL customers who have Preferred Care, meaning they wouldn't have to pay the $79 fee with a warranty claim.

That was a decent enough gesture, but now the company has made the change many customers expected months ago: the Preferred Care coverage length has been extended from 24 months to 30 months. The change was a quiet one that is now reflected on the Google Support website, where it lists 30 months of accidental damage coverage for Preferred Care customers instead of 24 months.

The plan also offers 6 months of mechanical breakdown coverage that starts after the 2-year manufacturer's warranty coverage ends. The coverage allows for up to two claims toward accidental damage and is provided through Assurant. Google provides the full list of Preferred Care benefits here.
