Pinterest adds GIF support

If Tumblr isn't satiating your GIF needs, Pinterest might become your new favorite stomping ground — the company has announced on its blog new support for GIFs, adding an element of easy-to-browse animations to the picture-pinning social network. To get people in the mood, it also collected together some of its favorites for all to enjoy.

GIFs — playable GIFs, that is — have been a much-requested feature among Pinterest users, making today an especially joyous occasion. There's already a nice collection of them available for browsing, since many have been uploaded despite their previously non-playing nature. Unfortunately, the support is only for Web users at the moment, though mobile support is promised "soon".

This follows some other recent news by the company, including a partnership with Getty Images that took place back in October 2013. Under the partnership, Getty's image data — which is quite vast — is used to give information in the form of metadata and proper attribution to images when possible.

The pin-it social network also brought back some missed features last year, including the "See it now" feature that shuttles users to their pin right after having pinned it. There was also the return of "Pinned from", which users say make it easier to find other like-minded pins that hold their interest, as well as @mentions.
