Overwatch director confirms more animated shorts are on the way

Despite strictly being a multiplayer-only game, Blizzard's Overwatch has a surprisingly detailed universe with plenty of story and lore for each of its characters. A large portion of the game's story is told through the animated short films that the developer has released on occasion, with the popular clips focusing on the backgrounds of specific characters, introducing new ones, and detailing the past events that led to the game's scenario.

It's been roughly six months since we've seen a new short — the last being the introduction of hacker Sombra — but fortunately Jeff Kaplan, the game's director, has confirmed that new animations are on the way. Speaking a media event in New York City this week to announce Overwatch's new Anniversary event, Kaplan commented that the developer loves using the shorts to tell new stories.

"The animated shorts are probably the thing that we have the most fun making. We really love working with our animation group and digging out the stories not tied to any constraints of gameplay — we can tell any stories we want.

We plan to tell more of those. We're hard at work on more of those."

Lastly the game director mentioned that he sees the animated shorts collected into "seasons," the first ending with "The Last Bastion," which was released back in August 2016. That would make November's Sombra short "Infiltration" the beginning of a second season.

We have no idea what character(s) will be featured in the next short, nor a timeframe for its debut. Kaplan admitted that they do take a long time to make, which explains why we haven't gotten a new one in some time, but with how well each short turns out, featuring an incredible attention to detail and quality, it's nice to know we see more at some point down the road.
