OnePlus customers reporting credit card fraud after purchasing phones

There's potentially bad news cropping up for OnePlus this morning, as some users are reporting that their credit cards have been compromised after making a purchase on the OnePlus website. Over the weekend, a thread on the OnePlus support forum has been filling up with claims of compromised credit cards, with a fair few customers saying they fell victim to fraud after making a purchasing their phones. Though OnePlus has made a statement about these claims, that statement doesn't really say much about the accuracy of them.

That support thread hosts a poll that asks readers to say whether or not their credit cards were breached after purchasing their OnePlus phone. In all, 29.5% of respondents says that their cards were compromised after making a OnePlus transaction. On the other hand, 37.4% of respondents say they haven't noticed any fraudulent activity in the time since purchasing their phones, while the final 33.2% note that they purchased their phones using PayPal.

Over on Reddit, we see much the same thing. In a thread on the OnePlus subreddit referencing those support forums posts, quite a few users have noted credit card fraud of their own. At that point, it becomes fairly obvious that something is going on, and it's prompted OnePlus to look into the matter.

In a separate statement posted to those same OnePlus support forums, the company acknowledges these claims and says it has launched an investigation into them. The statement stops short of confirming or denying that such a security breach exists, but OnePlus says that it will be looking into each reported case of credit card fraud. We're left with the promise that we'll be updated on the company's findings, so for now, it looks like we'll simply have to wait for more.

In the meantime, it might not be a bad idea to check your credit card statements for fraudulent purchases if you've used those cards to purchase something from the OnePlus website. We'll keep you posted on any new information OnePlus might share later on down the road, so stay tuned.
