OnePlus cops to weird OnePlus 7 Pro notifications: Here's what happened
If you own a OnePlus 7 Pro, there's a decent chance that you were sent some strange push notifications last night. OnePlus 7 Pro users have taken to Twitter to share screenshots of these nonsensical push notifications and ask why they were sent them in the first place. As it turns out, OnePlus messed up during a round of testing and sent these global push notifications by mistake.
OnePlus initially apologized for the matter in a tweet published early this morning. That tweet doesn't really delve into specifics, merely saying that the push notifications were mistakenly sent to some OnePlus 7 Pro users and ending on the promise of more information to follow.
During an internal test, our OxygenOS team accidentally sent out a global push notification to some OnePlus 7 Pro owners. We would like to apologize for any difficulties, and assure you that our team is currently investigating the error. We'll share more information soon.

That additional information was later published to the OnePlus forums. "We sincerely apologize for the two accidental notification push messages that some OnePlus 7 Pro users received 2 hours ago," the company said. OnePlus went on to say that as soon as the mistake was noticed, it performed "a round of in-depth investigations" to figure out where things went wrong.
Apparently, the OxygenOS team sent the messages accidentally while performing software testing for its upcoming Android Q system update. OnePlus says that the push notification functionality in OxygenOS exists "mainly as a survey tool," and is based on Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging protocol, which means that no personal data was at risk with these rogue push notifications.
So, if you were alarmed to see a pair of notifications on your phone that didn't make any sense, it sounds like you can breathe a sigh of relief. We probably won't see notifications appear out of the blue like this again, as OnePlus says that it's "immediately implementing new processes to ensure this cannot happen again."
