OnePlus 3 finally gets Nougat-based beta preview
OnePlus ruffled not a few feathers when it put out the OnePlus 3T just 6 months after the OnePlus 3. The startup, however, assured owners that the OnePlus 3 remains a priority and, in fact, will get Android 7.0 Nougat even before the 3T. True to its word, the latest Oxygen OS Open Beta 8 for the OnePlus 3 is now based on Nougat. And the timing couldn't be more timely has users have started reporting problems with touch latency on both the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T.
Those familiar with OnePlus' history might recall a time when its OnePlus One was plagued with touch sensitivity issues. Even the OnePlus 2 wasn't exempt, though to a much lesser degree. One would probably think that OnePlus has a curse when it comes to touch screen displays.
Company co-founder Carl Pei took to Twitter to acknowledge they have indeed heard their concerns and will look at the matter soon. That is to say, they still haven't pinned down whether there's a widespread problem at all. In addition, rolling out Android Nougat to the OnePlus 3 is its priority for now, a statement that has some owners fuming rather than rejoicing.
Pei asks for consideration in putting the timeline into perspective. OnePlus has promised Nougat for the OnePlus 3 before the year ends, leaving them with just a few weeks to prepare a final release. And within the 6 or so months that the smartphone has been in the market, they haven't received complaints about touch latency. In a nutshell, the problem is totally new to their ears and haven't yet confirmed on their end. But Nougat is already on the stove now and it is impossible to put it on the backburner at this point.
To be fair, the touch latency isn't a widespread issue, even among the newer OnePlus 3T. If OnePlus ever does trace the problem and make a fix for it, it would have to wait for early 2017. The fix, however, could arrive together with Android Nougat for the OnePlus 3T.
