NullCrew hacker arrested for cyberattack conspiracy

The Department of Justice has announced the arrest of a member of hacking collective NullCrew, Timothy Justin French. NullCrew is the self-proclaimed group behind some well-known cyberattacks, including some that resulted in the theft of data. French, who is 20-years-old, went by variations of the name "Orbit" and "crysis".

French was arrested by the FBI in Morristown, Tennessee earlier today. He's heading for prosecution in U.S. District Court in Chicago, though when that will take place hasn't yet been determined. Charges, however, have been filed — French is accused of conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse.

The hacker's downfall came in the form of an FBI informant who was invited into chats with NullCrew. During these chats, information about attacks past and present were discussed, as well as plans for the future. This informant aided the FBI, serving as a witness. French used his own IP address during the attacks, helping lead to his arrest.

French is said to have participated in five cyberattacks, but none of the companies and organizations were named. Each of the attacks in which French participated, personal information gathered during the attacks was released. The hacker is facing up to ten years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines.
