Nokia 1 Android Pie update has Android users dreaming of better days

You may have not heard of HMD Global before but it has certainly made waves in the mobile market when it acquired Nokia's name to continue the Finnish brand's mobile legacy. HMD Global has also risen among the ranks by providing a pure Android experience and keeping up with its commitment to push out regular updates. The latest proof of that is the Nokia 1, its first Android Go phone that is now receiving Android 9 Pie.

Launched in early 2018, the Nokia 1 was HMD Global's first Android Go phone. As part of that family of devices, it didn't have much to offer in the way of features. It was pretty much the entry—level phone of the Android world, with a 4.5-inch FWVGA screen and 1 GB of RAM.

Despite its lean configuration, Android Go edition phones didn't actually carry any promise of regular updates the way Android One did. It was still up to the OEM and most manufacturers tend to forget their cheap phones ever existed after they made a few sales.

HMD Global has been turning heads in the Android world by going beyond the call of duty to update its phones. Earlier this month, it rolled out Android 9 Pie to the Nokia 3, keeping up with its promise of two years of major Android updates. Now it's the Nokia 1's turn, even though there is no guarantee of updates.

Android users will probably wish all manufacturers were as diligent as HMD Global. Granted, there are relatively fewer Nokia phones in the market today but, if HMD keeps up its track record and improves on areas like cameras, it will probably have more users in no time.
