No Man's Sky big "Next" update detailed with new trailer

We've known about No Man's Sky's big incoming update, dubbed Next, for several months, but we're quickly closing in on its release date. The update is due to be released on July 24, alongside the Xbox One version of the game. Though there have been a couple of trailers previewing No Man's Sky Next up to this point, but today, the folks at Hello Games are detailing the update more than they ever have before.

In a post to the PlayStation Blog, Hello Games founder Sean Murray paints a much clearer picture of what to expect from the update. According to that post, Next is going to offer up a ton of content, and will finally make good on the company's promise of true-to-form multiplayer.

In fact, the major focus of Next is multiplayer, as it'll allow you to group up with friends or be matched with random players. In these squads, you'll be able to build expansive colonies with the game's uncapped base building feature, though you'll also be able to do things like explore, dogfight, and even build tracks on which to race your exocraft as a group.

Next will also feature something of a visual overhaul, allowing you to play in either first-person or third-person perspective. Murray says Next will serve up "dramatically improved planetary terrain generation, ground textures, water, and clouds," with more detailed ship models, buildings, and NPCs. Base building will become unlimited, granting players the ability to build "anywhere on any planet" with "hundreds" of new building pieces. Finally, you'll be able to build a fleet a frigates and command them from your very own freighter, which is a long requested feature.

All in all, it sounds like Next, when combined with all of the other updates that have launched for No Man's Sky, will go a long way toward fixing many of the problems the game had at launch. The update will be free for all players and it'll be here on July 24. Are you looking forward to it? Head down to the comments section and let us know.
