Nissan unveils new Sentra SR Turbo for 2017

It's been more than a few years since the Sentra SE-R held the position of an affordable, sporty compact in Nissan's lineup, but we might just be seeing a return to those days with announcement of the new 2017 Sentra SR Turbo. The four-door sedan joins the Juke in offering a turbocharged inline-four, but substantially one-ups the stock 124-hp Sentra SR with a 1.6-liter engine that puts out 188-hp and 177 lb-ft of torque.

Along with a much peppier engine, the Sentra SR Turbo also adds the option for a six-speed manual, promising a fun, exciting drive without breaking the bank. If that's not your bag, however, there's also an automatic-simulating continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Other additions for the Sentra SR Turbo are upgraded suspension and braking, with springs that are 10% stiffer and increased damping on the front and rear struts by 23% and 50%, respectively. The standard Sentra's 11-inch front brake discs have been bumped up to 11.7 inches on the SR Turbo, while the rear discs measure 11.5 inches.

Unchanged from the standard Sentra SR, however, are things like the rear spoiler, LED headlights, 17-inch wheels, and the interior. The optional Premium Package upgrades this to include leather seats, navigation, and a premium Bose sound system. Apple's CarPlay is not included, unfortunately, but Nissan says Siri Eyes Free Voice Recognition comes standard.

The 2017 Sentra SR Turbo should be arriving in showrooms starting in October, featuring a base price of $23,000.
