Nintendo's Super Mario Odyssey Q&A got weird, quick

There's no question that Super Mario Odyssey was one of the biggest games of 2017, and such a widely-played game is sure to inspire some burning, poignant questions among its player base. Nintendo has decided that it is time these questions get answers. In a new video, Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi, a man who was seen heavily promoting the game in the lead up to its launch, sits down to field queries from fans and give us all of the important details as someone in the know.

Of course, the first question centers around one of the earliest Super Mario Odyssey memes, because it couldn't be any other way. The first question asks "Why does Mario have nipples, but no belly button (and did you expect fans to have this kind of reaction to the reveal)?" Unfortunately for us, Mr. Koizumi doesn't really give a concrete answer to that question.

"So, we're jumping right into that question, are we?" Koizumi asks with a laugh. "Well, to be perfectly honest, I didn't really expect that to be a topic among fans. Once I heard that people were talking so much about Mario's belly button, it made me start to think about whether we should revisit the topic on the design side."

That's all Koizumi says on the matter, so if you were hoping for something with a little more substance, you're going to have to wait and see if this question is ever revisited. Koizumi, however, does settle a long running debate within the Super Mario community, revealing that the mushroom cap on top of Toad's head is not a hat, but rather a part of head that is attached.
