Netflix Resurrects Lucifer Following Fox Cancellation

Last month, Fox revealed that it wasn't going to renew Lucifer for a fourth season. The news upset fans who, despite the series short run, had grown fond of the show and its relatively unique story. Here to save the day is Netflix, which has acquired Lucifer and promised to give fans, at minimum, a fourth season.

The show was cancelled last month, making it the latest Fox casualty despite a strong fan base. As soon as the network made it clear that a renewal wasn't going to happen, Warner Bros. became shopping Lucifer around to other networks in hopes of getting it picked up.

Netflix is notorious for acquiring shows first established on network television, but later dropped after a few seasons. It did something similar with, for example, Longmire, which struggled to survive on network TV due to the average age of its viewers and advertisers' desire to target younger audiences.

The streaming service has proven a good fit for a number of saved shows, and unlike traditional cable, it's not influenced by the needs of advertisers or traditional (read: live) viewer numbers. Similar issues recently led to SyFy dropping hit sci-fi series The Expanse, which was soon acquired by Amazon for Prime Video.

According to Deadline, and later confirmed on the official Lucifer Twitter account, Netflix will bring the show under its "Originals" wing with the production of a fourth season. The report claims that Amazon was also interested in Lucifer; the terms of Netflix's acquisition aren't clear. Whether the company will renew it for a fifth season and beyond is yet to be seen.
