Netflix 'Resident Evil' original TV show tipped in early development

Netflix is working on a new original series script, according to a recent report, and it is based on the Resident Evil universe. According to the leak, Netflix plans to create its own Resident Evil TV show, one that is said to be in the pipeline for a global launch. Assuming the information is correct, Netflix is working on the series with Constantin Film, a German production company.

The popular Resident Evil movie franchise began in 2002, ultimately spawning half a dozen movies produced by Constantin Film. Though it wasn't the most successful franchise overall, the series ended up taking the title as the most popular movies based on a video game. That film series ended in 2016 with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

Now that the movies have wrapped up, Netflix is here to fill the void with a TV show based on the same universe, according to a report from Deadline. The show will allegedly "deepen" the universe's already established mythology, maintaining the foundation story while building upon it with its own plot.

The leak describes Netflix's alleged original show as a 'drama' that will dive deeper into Umbrella Corporation and the world around it. Development is said to still be in the early stages; Netflix is reportedly working on a script right now. A showrunner hasn't been brought in at this point, nor does there appear to any any cast members on board.

The news joins a recent report indicating that Constantin Film is considering a Resident Evil movie reboot that would bring the franchise back to theaters, but with new stars and stories. It's unclear at this point whether a theatrical reboot is officially in the pipeline — and whether we could potentially ever see a Resident Evil original movie at Netflix.
