Netflix plans original animated shows based on Roald Dahl universe

Netflix plans to create a batch of animated content based on Roald Dahl's stories, including Matilda, The BFG, and more. The company says it will "reimagine and extend" the stories for a global audience, targeting them at viewers of all ages. The announcement was made in conjunction with the Roald Dahl Story Company.

Netflix indicates there will be several original animated series based on these stories, also expanding upon them, meaning viewers may be treated to new storylines within the Dahl universe. The company plans to start production on its first round of content starting some time next year.

Talking about the new deal is Roald Dahl's widow Felicity Dahl:

Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl's stories. This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled.

In addition to the "premium animated event series," Netflix mentions plans to create "specials," perhaps referring to feature length movies. Netflix's VP of Kids & Family Content Melissa Cobb said the content will present the stories in "fresh, contemporary ways."

According to Netflix, it has struck a deal to make animated content based on the following stories:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Matilda

The BFG

The Twits

Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator

George's Marvelous Medicine

Boy – Tales of Childhood
