Netflix places order for 'Altered Carbon' sci-fi series

The cyberpunk sci-fi book "Altered Carbon" will soon be made into an original Netflix series, according to a new report. Netflix has ordered a ten-episode first season based on the 2002 novel by Richard K. Morgan, with Skydance Television serving as the studio behind it. This move comes years after rights to an adaption of the book were acquired by Laeta Kalogridis.

The information comes from Deadline, which reports that Kalogridis nabbed the rights through Mythology Entertainment about four years ago. She is serving as the show's executive producer and writer; she also has the rights to some of Morgan's other books.

For its part, "Altered Carbon" is a science fiction novel set is the 25th century, a time when humans have trumped death by managing to digitize their minds and transfer them into new bodies as needed. The book revolves around main character Takeshi Kovacs who has lived much longer than an average human and who has, more or less, had a rough time during many of those years.

Reportedly there is a screenplay based the book already written, but it isn't clear if a script for the Netflix series is already in place. Details about the show's plot and/or approach haven't been detailed. Likewise, a premiere date hasn't been stated (and likely isn't yet set in stone).
