Netflix may soon let Black Mirror viewers choose what happens next

Netflix is about to launch a choose-your-own-adventure video for adults, according to new reports, building upon the interactive content it has already launched for kids. The new ability will first come to a new episode of Black Mirror, sources claim, but other specials with the same interactive choices are said to also be in development.

Rumors about choose-your-own-adventure programming at Netflix first surfaced many months ago, that leading to the launch of select kids content with the feature. When watching this type of show, users are prompted to choose what happens next in the storyline, something similar to the series of Choose Your Own Adventure books popular decades ago.

It was unclear whether the company would ever bring the same ability to adult programming, but Bloomberg claims that will happen soon. The next season of Black Mirror will reportedly bring an interactive episode, marking the first of its kind for adults. The report claims that other similar videos will also be released.

The sources claim that Netflix has penned a deal for a live-action choose-your-own-adventure project — whether it is a TV show or movie is unclear — and is working to close similar deals with others. The report alleges that two of the projects are video game adaptions, but which ones weren't revealed.

The new type of video programming represents a new series of issues and burdens to iron out. Writers must write multiple versions of the same episode or movie and actors must complete multiple versions of the same scenes. This results in more work and higher cost. It's unclear how many different options will be presented, but the report indicates that adult choose-your-own-adventure programming will have a greater complexity than the kids' offerings.
