Netflix HDR now works on these three new phones

4K might still not be a thing, despite what Sony wants to make out of it, but HDR seems to be the next hot thing on premium smartphones. But as with any new entertainment trend, the problem is whether there's content available to take advantage of the new technology. Fortunately, Netflix is coming to HDR's rescue by enabling HDR mobile support for the Sony Xperia XZ1, the LG V30, and, of course, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

Smartphone displays have definitely become more capable, to the point that they are, to some extent, catching up with technologies usually only found on larger screens, like TV and monitors. But more and more people are watching more content on their phones than on their TVs. Unsurprisingly, the biggest proponents of HDR on mobile happen to be the big three TV makers as well.

As for content, Netflix is undoubtedly the biggest content source on mobile, next to YouTube perhaps. So it's only fitting that it also be the one to push for this new format as far as mobile content goes. It already did so recently when it added both the Xperia XZ Premium and the LG G6 to its very exclusive club.

Now that roster includes the three high-end smartphones announced at IFA 2017 (and one before it), bringing the total to five. Interestingly, the Xperia XZ1 is the only one with a 1080p Full HD screen. Who said you can't enjoy HDR with fewer pixels.

Netflix's list of supported devices is both curious and inconsistent. For example, the Galaxy S8 is, in theory, capable of HDR as well, but is nowhere to be seen. The LG G6 is also the only device listed to support both HDR and Dolby Vision formats, even though, at least in theory, the LG V30 is also capable of both.
