Netflix announces true-crime documentary series 'Making A Murderer'

Streaming video giant Netflix continues to announce new original content, with it latest being a documentary series based on real crime events. Titled, Making A Murderer, the series is aimed at drawing in viewers who got caught up in similar stories like the Serial podcast or The Jinx on HBO. The 10-episode series will begin streaming on Netflix starting December 18th, and is directed by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos.Making A Murderer will dive into the real-life story of Steven Avery, a man who spent 18 months in prison after being found guilty of assault, possession of a firearm, and sexual assault. He was then released after DNA evidence proved he was not involved in the crime, however, in 2005 he then became a suspect for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.

Directors Ricciardi and Demos say they were drawn in by the turmoil and confusion surrounding the investigation of the second crime. "If we had not been there to witness these events we would have trouble believing they actually occurred, the pair commented in Netflix's announcement," adding, "Our partnership with Netflix has allowed us to tell this story in a way that wouldn't have been possible anywhere else."

Netflix describes the series as one that will "take viewers inside a riveting, high-stakes criminal case where reputation is everything and things are never as they appear." Ricciardi and Demos spent 10 years on their investigation of the events, detailing everything from the second trial to interviews with those involved in the case, all while trying to tell the story from each angle.
