Moto Z Droid, Force Droid slowly getting Android 7.0 Nougat

Once upon a time, Motorola, while still under the watchful eye of Google, would roll out major Android updates as fast as Google can for the Nexus. Those days may be long gone, but it seems that ol' Moto is still trying to do good by its fans. At least those from Verizon, that is. The good news: some owners of the Verizon-exclusive Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force Droid have reported receiving the update that will take them to Android 7.0 Nougat. The bad news: the same cannot be sent of any other Moto Z model, including the Moto Z Play.

Almost every new Android version, though not all, has been met by some excitement. Android Nougat can quite easily be placed among the "exciting" releases, especially for devices with large screens, a.k.a. phablets. The latest version of the mobile operating system brings, among other things, enhanced multi-tasking, like split-screen windows and quick switching between two most recent apps.

Every Android release is also a guessing game as to which OEM will roll out the update to their latest and greatest and when. LG already called dibs on both the first commercially available Nougat smartphone as well as the first to receive the update. And now it seems like Motorola quickly catching up, but only if you happen to own one of two Verizon-only models, the Moto Z Droid or the Moto Z Force Droid.

Based on the comments on the Reddit thread, the non-Droid version of the Moto Z still hasn't received any such notice. Nada for the mid-range Moto Z Play either. Then again, it seems that the early update has taken everyone, even a Verizon employee, by surprise, so Verizon might just have been given a head start before the update rolls out to everyone else.
