Mega Man is finally getting a live-action film because why not

Live-action adaptations of popular game franchises have had more misses than hits. Still, the promise of raking in billions when you do make a box office hit is still luring both game publishers and studios to make the million dollar gamble. The latest to get the Hollywood treatment is Capcom's Mega Man, a franchise that just celebrated its 30th anniversary. And, of course the adaptation is promised to have "the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for."

On the one hand, this is definitely one of the most awaited live-action adaptations of a gaming franchise. Mega Man has indeed appeared in many products already, from merchandise to animated series. Given the number of fan-made Mega Man short films on the Internet, you can be sure fans are more than tickled pink.

On the other hand, Hollywood has never been great at adaptations, of games, toys, or other popular characters and brands. Many have been made to wait with bated breath only to end up wanting to tear their hair out at every explosion and lens flare effect. Some have even been accused of ruining people's fondest childhood memories.

Capcom reports that 20th Century Fox has accepted to make the gamble. MEGA MAN, which is its tentative title, will be written and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Paranormal Activities 3 & 4) will be writing and directing. The film will be produced by Chernin Entertainment (Planet of the Apes) together with Masi Oka (Hiro Nakamura from Heroes). No release date has been announced yet but consider us both elated and scared at the same time.
