Marvel Black Widow movie gets writer in latest move toward greenlight

Fans have been calling for Marvel to make a standalone Black Widow movie, and though the studio still hasn't officially announced one, sources say the company has taken a step in that direction. Marvel has reportedly brought in a writer to pen a script for the potential movie, which sources caution still hasn't been given the greenlight to proceed. The movie is said to be in its very early development stage.

Black Widow is the Marvel character played by Scarlett Johansson, who will continue in the role for the rumored movie, assuming the movie gets a greenlight. Variety reports on behalf of unnamed sources that Marvel has selected Jac Schaeffer to write the movie's script after consulting with Johansson on what the team wanted in a writer.

Marvel President Kevin Feige reportedly talked to several candidates, ultimately choosing Schaeffer, who wrote "The Shower" and is on board to write "Nasty Women." Marvel, however, hasn't commented on any of these rumors and no official plans for a "Black Widow" movie have been made.

Black Widow first appeared in the Marvel movie universe in the film Iron Man 2, going on to appear in multiple movies while winning viewers' hearts. Many fans have been calling for a standalone film featuring the character, but thus far Marvel has focused its cinematic efforts elsewhere. That may, finally, be changing.

This isn't the first time we've heard rumors about a standalone Black Widow movie. Back in early 2015, word surfaced that Marvel had held talks about creating the film with actress Johansson, who had revealed the news in an interview with Collider. That news didn't lead anywhere, though; hopefully things will be different this time around.
