MacGyver is finally getting a reboot thanks to Furious 7 director

The amount of TV show reboots we're getting these days may be on the edge of "too many," but the latest to be announced is a series that we've all, at least once, thought would be a good idea: the 80's hit MacGyver. The word is that CBS is working on a reboot of the series, which focused on a hero that could get himself out of any dangerous situation with just a few seemingly random items, with Furious 7 director James Wan as an executive producer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly, CBS hasn't committed to ordering a full season of the show yet, but has agreed to make the pilot, which Wan is developing. The show is said to feature a younger, 20-something MacGyver, who "gets recruited into a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening."

The original MacGyver series starred Richard Dean Anderson as the titular hero, and aired for seven seasons. Wan has been interested in rebooting the show for some time, as he was originally involved in a MacGyver movie in 2012, but that was put on hold as he was tapped to direct Furious 7.

In an interview earlier this year, the director expressed his excitement over a MacGyver reboot, explaining that his idea for the story involved MacGyver in "something like a North by Northwest: He gets blamed for something that he had designed, something really big that's something everyone wanted, and now someone has weaponized it and everyone's coming after him."
