Lutz Pathfinder is the UK's First Driverless Car

The first driverless car for the UK is set to be unveiled this week and it is aimed at helping commuters, shoppers, and the elderly travel over short distances. The new driverless car will be unveiled in Greenwich, London this week and is called the Lutz Pathfinder prototype pod. The car is the first of 40 cars that will hit the streets of Milton Keynes later in the year.

The unveiling of the Pathfinder is coming on the same day that UK authorities have cleared the way for driverless vehicles to be tested on the roads in Britain. The move is aimed to put Britain at the front of the pack for developing driverless vehicle technology.

The Lutz Pathfinder is part of the Autodrive project that is led by the Government Transport Systems Catapult, which is a center for intelligent mobility in the UK. The driverless car being unveiled will be tested in the urban lab of Milton Keynes to be sure that the driverless cars can comply with the rules of the road and insurance mandates.

Additional public trials will be held as the cars are gradually introduced to other cities in the UK over time. The driverless cars can transport two people and their luggage with a range of 40 miles and a top speed of 15mph. Supporters of the plan hope to reduce pollution and congestion by shifting people from normal cars to the driverless transport.
