LG's Signature Refrigerator automatically opens for you

While LG's new OLED TV's took the spotlight at their press conference this morning, it wasn't the only part of their new signature line that was worth a look. While I'm not one to get excited about kitchen appliances, their new LG Signature Refrigeratior had a couple of interesting features worth looking at.

LG already has their door-in-door technology out in the wild, which gives you a smaller door on one of the main doors of the fridge. They took it a step further this year by adding what they call "Knock-on Door-in-Door" (they do like their hyphens). With this feature, you need only simply knock twice on the glass, and it will turn from opaque to transparent, allowing you to easily see everything inside. This means no more opening your fridge door to see what leftovers you have, and wasting energy in the process.

While that feature is neat, my personal favorite was the Auto Door Open ability. The fridge projects the words "open door" onto a small area just in front of one of the doors. If you put your foot on this spot, the door will pop open, allowing you to unload your groceries, without having to scramble to open the door, first. Apparently LG has figured out a way to diferentiate between a human foot/shoe and a pet, as the presenter specifically stated that pets could not open the door this way. No word as to whether crawling infants will be able to do the same.

Finally, the LG Signature Refrigerator is equipped with their Inverter Linear Compressor, which allows it to automatially adjust itself based on internal load conditions. It also generates less internal friction by design. Both features will help keep energy usage to a minimum.
