Leica M (Typ 262) rangefinder camera now available

Leica has introduced its new Leica M (Typ 262) digital rangefinder camera. This is the company's latest "M" camera, joining the existing Leica M, M-P (Typ 240) and M Monochrom (Typ 246) models. With the newest model, Leica says it offers "the most essential features" on a camera that embraces the "purest form" of photography. The camera maker has designed this M model to focus on the aspects it considers the "essentials."

The Leica M (Typ 262) features a 24-megapixel CMOS sensor, a Maestro image processor, and maximum still image resolution of 5952 x 3976 pixels. Features include an ISO range from 100 to 6400, seven white balance presets, and support for shooting in RAW as well as JPEG. There is no image stabilization, however.

Users have manual focus but not digital, which is expected given the model. On the back of the camera lies a 3-inch fixed LCD with 921k dots, as well as an optical rangefinder. Shutter speed ranges from 1/4000 to 60 seconds, and while there's no integrated flash, there is a hot shoe for using an external flash. Continuous shooting maxes at 3FPS, and there's both exposure and AE bracketing.

Don't expect to record video with the camera, as it features neither a speaker nor a microphone. Storage is by way of an SD/SDHC/SDXC card. There's a remote control and USB 2.0 port. Overall, the camera weighs 680 grams, and measures in at 5.47 x 3.15 x 1.65-inches. The camera is available now from Leica for $5,195 USD.
