iPhone X and 8 Verizon BOGO deal is complex but worth it

It isn’t often we see discounts on iPhones, but every once in a while, carriers like to break them out to get people in the door. Today, that carrier is Verizon, which has announced a new BOGO deal on the most recent iPhones. That offer is a little convoluted, as these carrier deals tend to be, with Verizon imposing a few different requirements in order to take advantage of it.

Beginning on January 29, Verizon will give you $699 off a second iPhone 8, 8+, or iPhone X when you buy one on device payment with a trade-in. While this promotion is open to people who are upgrading or switching from another carriers, perhaps the biggest caveat is that the second iPhone you get at a discount will need to be activated on a new line of service on a Verizon unlimited plan. That, importantly, means that you can’t use this promotion to upgrade two of your lines.

Another complication is how the $699 discount is applied. You won’t receive it as cash back, but rather as a monthly bill credit split over 24 months. That isn’t a bad deal considering that the credit will take care of most of your monthly cost for the second phone, but it’s something that warrants attention nonetheless.

The good news, however, is that you’ll get the trade-in credit for your phone in addition to the $699 bill credit for taking advantage of this, so you’ll have a little extra money coming your way with that counted. It seems like you can trade in any smartphone as long as it’s in good, working condition, but you’ll need to send it in within 30 days in order to qualify for the bill credit.

So, to recap, you can take advantage of this offer if you: pay for both phones through device payment, activate one of the phones on a new line of service on a Verizon unlimited plan, and send in your trade-in phone within 30 days of buying your pair of iPhones. As I said, there are quite a few requirements that come along with this deal, but if you think you can meet them, look for this offer to go live on January 29.
