iPhone 6 gaming to improve drastically with 'Metal'

If you recall Apple's WWDC, you might remember Metal. The new game engine for iOS puts the processor closer to the game itself, removing a lot of the OpenGL, which is the software between the actual app and the processor. How does it stack up, though? All too well, at least on stage.

Metal is meant to give Developers a creative license to do more, and not have as many software constraints holding them back. It's great for them, and even better for us. On stage, the games look as good or better than any console game you may currently be playing. Of course, these are demos, but at least show what Metal is capable of.

When it comes to mobile gaming, Metal takes the things that are traditionally difficult to accomplish on mobile — like shading or shadowing — and makes them easier to render and actuate. Think of it like a music track that doesn't buffer.

Metal should make gaming a lot more fun, a bit quicker, and a whole lot more appealing to the eye. By taking away a lot of OpenGL, Apple is stripping away a constraint that doesn't need to be there for iOS. As gaming is one of the major money makers for app Developers, this should make a lot of people on both sides of the fence happy.
