Invader Zim will rise again...in the form of a TV movie

The Nickelodeon cartoon Invader Zim invaded our hearts and imaginations more than a decade ago, only to end up short-lived and relegated to online streaming services. If you've long awaited the classic cartoon's return, there's good news coming your way: Invader Zim will be hitting televisions soon(ish) in the form of a made-for-TV animated movie. A teaser trailer for the movie has already been released.

Invader Zim is the brainchild of Jhonen Vasquez, and it revolves around a loser alien who gets sent with a robot buddy named GIR to Earth. Zim's mission was never a serious one, not to his alien brethren who simply wanted to be rid of him, but Zim takes it deadly serious and only one human is onto him.

The cartoon grew popular for its unique art style and its warped storylines, including one in which Zim gorges himself with human organs in an attempt to confound human suspicions. The series launched on Nickelodeon back in 2001, but was unfortunately cancelled in 2004. Now, more than a decade later, Nickelodeon has given the go-ahead for a new movie based on the series.

This represents what is quickly appearing to be a new trend at Nick — the resurrection of its most popular 90s (and close-to-90s) cartoons, something the adults who grew up watching them have long been requesting. Last year, Nickelodeon similarly authorized the creation of a new Hey Arnold movie, as well as a Rocky's Modern Life movie.
