Instagram adds comment threads to make conversations easier

Instagram has finally introduced comment threads, making conversations easier to follow by indenting replies posted to specific existing comments. Threaded comments have already been available on Facebook for a long while, and they have made their way to some other services, too. It only makes sense to introduce them on Instagram, where viewers have the ability to comment on shared photos and videos.

If you're still not sure what threaded comments are, check out the image below. To put it simply, up until now Instagram presented all comments in a linear column, and though you can mention specific people who may have commented before you, it is a bit tricky to follow long conversations. Conversations on Facebook, by contrast, are cleaner and easier to follow thanks to the ability to reply to specific users, with replies being indented beneath the parent comment.

That same threading structure has gone live on Instagram, the service announced today, though you'll need to be running Instagram version 24 or higher to see them. The feature is available on both Android and iOS. The company explains that comment threads are rolling out across the world now, but that it will take some weeks to wrap up. If you're not seeing it yet, keep checking.

In other recent Instagram news, the company recently started testing the ability to add a second person to a livestream, putting two faces on the same single video feed. This second person can be added by tapping the smiley face located on the lower right-hand side of the screen, then choosing the person from your Instagram list. Find out more on that here!
