Huawei bootloader unlocking codes are being eliminated

Huawei has announced that it will stop providing bootloader unlock codes for its future devices. The confirmation follows an issue Huawei/Honor handset owners were experiencing earlier this month in accessing the bootloader unlock codes page on the Huawei website. According to the company, it made its decision due to the risk that comes with ROMs.

Signs of the change arrived in early May when the bootloader unlock codes page disappeared. No explanation for the disappearance was provided, and the company mostly avoided acknowledging the change entirely. It was a blow to users who prefer to modify their devices. Users only had the option to directly request — and then wait for — an unlock code.

Now, nearly a month later, we know why the change happened: Huawei is putting an end to bootloader unlock codes for its future devices. In its announcement published yesterday, Huawei said the decision is intended to "provide [a] better user experience and avoid issues caused by ROM flashing."

The change affects all devices launched after May 24, 2018. If you have a device that was released before that date, you'll still be able to get an unlock code, but that option will disappear in 60 days. After those 60 days are up, the codes will no longer be available for the older devices.
