Horizon Zero Dawn sales rocket to 2.6 million

For most developers, launching a brand new IP the same week a new console comes out is a no-go. Beyond that, launching a new IP the same week a new console and a new game in The Legend of Zelda series release would probably be insanity. That isn't the case for Sony, which launched Horizon Zero Dawn for the PlayStation just a few days before the Nintendo Switch and Breath of the Wild arrived on the scene.

That gamble seems to have paid off in a big way, as Sony announced today that Horizon Zero Dawn sold 2.6 million copies in its first two weeks of availability. That is a very impressive number, especially when you consider that Horizon wasn't an established franchise heading into launch. When you look at the kind of competition it had during its launch week, this becomes an even larger victory for Sony.

Sony calls this the best launch of a new first-party IP on PS4, while developer Guerrilla Games says this is the best launch it's ever had. That means Horizon Zero Dawn had a better launch than any of the Killzone titles, which Guerrilla Games is also responsible for. The studio used news of this milestone to announce that it's working on a story expansion for Horizon Zero Dawn, but for now, word of its existence is all we're going to get.

So, if you enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn (or are still in the process of enjoying it), then this is encouraging news, because it almost certainly means there's a sequel in the pipeline. In the meantime, though, we've got more content for Horizon to look forward too. Hopefully Geurrilla will be ready to share some details soon, and when they do, we'll have them here for you.
