Hertz adds cameras inside some rent cars

If you travel a lot and rent cars, you should know that Hertz has started to add cameras inside some of its rental vehicles. The cameras are reportedly being added to the NeverLost GPS device that is inside many of the cars that Hertz rents to drivers. These cameras in the GPS devices are said to be able to see the entire inside of the car.

Many rental companies have been able to track speed and location information on their cars for a long time. Moving to being able to actually see what people are doing inside the car is something else entirely and many people are upset at the thought of being watched while they drive.

The latest version of the Hertz NeverLost system has the camera and audio capability. Older versions of the system do not. The version of the NeverLost system with the camera installed is NeverLost 6 and according to Hertz only 1 in 8 of its cars has that version installed.

Hertz also says that it doesn't have "adequate bandwidth capabilities" to stream video and audio at this time. At this time is notable, because if Hertz didn't intend to do something with that camera I can't imagine that it would pay extra to have a camera added to the GPS devices it buys. Hertz says that the camera was added so it could bring live agent support via streaming video in the future.
