Here’s what the huge Samsung Galaxy View will cost you

As far as reasonable tablets are concerned, 12-inches seem to be the tipping point between size and portability. Ever the contrarian looking for something new to convince people to buy, Samsung went the extra mile, or rather extra few inches, with the 18.4-inch Galaxy View tablet. If you could still call it that. If, however, you’ve been sold on the device, you will be able to grab or lug one around starting November 6, for the price of a high-end smartphone but with specs that don’t match.

Let’s take a quick recap of the core specs. That 18.4-inch screen only supports a max resolution of 1920×1080, that’s Full HD and not even a 2K that you might expect for a display this size. There’s a 1.6 GHz octa-core processor running inside, helped by 2 GB of RAM. The rest of the specs are pretty basic as well, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a microSD card slot for storage expansion, and the like.

This isn’t going to be a workhorse device. In fact, Samsung is trying to sell it as a purely content consumption device. Like for watching videos in the kitchen or playing digital board games with the family. While it does have a carrying handle, it’s most likely meant to be moved just around the house and not carried outside, which would most likely earn you some strange stares.

But for this entertainment device, Samsung expects you to fork over $599. That’s just for the Wi-Fi only version with 32 GB of storage. The LTE model might be offered by a carrier, though no names have been dropped yet. EIther way, it will be a pricey piece of equipment that might not even find a niche market. Given how slim its profits were last quarter, it’s curious to see Samsung willing to spend resources on a product that might have very little ROI.
