Byton K-Byte Concept Gallery

Byton has revealed its second car, the Byton K-Byte Concept, following on from its concept SUV at CES 2018. The new sedan is intended to show how autonomous technologies could be integrated with what's still a fairly traditional, three-box shape. That relies on retractable sensors for Level 4 driving.

Level 4 means that, while Byton isn't promising fully driverless abilities under every condition, the K-Byte could in theory take control in specific, select conditions. It's arguably a more practical approach than trying to build a car that can tackle every road and situation. Byton says it hopes to have a fleet of Level 4 prototypes on the road by the end of 2020.

It'll do that with Aurora, an autonomous driving technology firm. The K-Byte has front and rear LIDAR sensors, along with retractable side LIDAR sensors that could be extended when the car is controlling itself. Illumination around those sensors could also communicate to pedestrians what the vehicle is doing.
