Google Play Points loyalty program hints found in APK teardown

Hints of a loyalty program called "Play Points" have been discovered in an APK teardown, according to a new report. This program appears to be a way to reward Android users who purchase content from the Google Play store, giving them points that can be used toward goods. An icon associated with the Play Points program was found, as well as badges for rank levels based on user tiers.

The discovery was made by 9to5Google, which found code mentioning Play Points in version 11.5 and 11.6 of the Play Store, as well as the Japanese version of the app. One piece of code includes the text, "Introducing Google Play Points." Another bit of text states, "Earn points on everything you buy. Use points for special in-app items or Google Play credit."

The code discovered in the Japanese version of the Google Play app shows users earning 1 point per 100 yen purchased, indicating that points will be issued based on the amount of money spent rather than on a per-app basis. Whether that system would be used for all regions is unclear.

The teardown founds signs of five "levels" of Play Point user member tiers ranging from bronze to diamond. Benefits received by the user apparently depends on their rank. The code also indicates that users will be able to view their Play Points history, track how they use their points, and see when their points are scheduled to expire.

The code also hints at a voting feature involving apps, though it's hard to say what Google has planned for it. The Account page will seemingly be redesigned when the program arrives, gaining a new Rewards section, and a place to find free items and deals.
