Golden Globes 2018: how to stream it live this weekend

The 2018 Golden Globes award show will be streamed live for the first time ever, another sign that we live in a mostly post-cable world. Whether you're a cable subscription who doesn't like being restricted to the cable box or a cord-cutter looking for a way to watch at the same time as everyone else, you'll now have an option. The live-over-the-Internet award ceremony won't be without a big restriction, though.

The live stream is being made possible via a deal between the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC, according to Deadline. NBC, obviously, has gotten the rights to live stream the 75th Golden Globes event; that'll happen on the network's NBC.com/live website, as well as through its NBC mobile app.

If you're looking to stream the ceremony on your television, but without using satellite or cable, you'll have to sign up for one of the OTT live TV services that offer NBC, among them being DirecTV NOW, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, YouTube TV, and Hulu Live TV.

If you want to watch online or through the mobile app, you'll need to be a pay TV subscriber. So while this is good news for cord-cutters who may otherwise have to resort to pirated streams, it still isn't quite the "pure" experience some cord-cutters may want. Regardless, it's a step in the right direction as far as entertainment goes.

The 2018 Golden Globes will take place on January 7 (that's that day after next) starting at 5PM PT / 8PM ET. The easiest way to get started watching, assuming you're a pay TV customer, is to go over to NBC's live website and authorize it by logging into your account. You'll need service through one of the major providers, such as Comcast Xfinity, AT&T U-verse, COX, Charter, Verizon, or similar.
