Georgia city will create 345 acre Amazon City if it gets company's HQ2

The city of Stonecrest, Georgia is desperate to become the location of Amazon's corporate hub dubbed HQ2, and it is willing to change its name to prove it. The city has declared that it will rename (part of) itself "Amazon" if it becomes the coveted location for Amazon's second North American headquarters. Plans to establish HQ2 were revealed early last month.

Amazon has long called Seattle home; that's where its headquarters is located. However, the company announced in September that it is planning to launch a second headquarters in North America, a place it will call HQ2 and eventually offer up to 50,000 jobs. The announcement quickly spurred proposals from cities throughout the nation, among them being Stonecrest, Georgia.

According to the local publication AJC, the Stonecrest City Council recently voted in favor of the name change 4-2, something that would involve splitting off 345 acres of land that would be formed into the city of Amazon. This assuming Amazon picks the location for its headquarters, of course.

To pitch the plan, Stonecrest Mayor Jason Lary said, "There are several major US cities that want Amazon, but none has the branding opportunity we are now offering this visionary company. How could you not want your 21st century headquarters to be located in a city named Amazon?" Naturally, Stonecrest itself would expand its city services into Amazon city.

Whether Amazon will ultimately be wooed by the deal is yet to be seen. While the prospect of having a headquarters located in a city named after the company is intriguing, Amazon has certain things it is looking for in its future home. Among those requirements is close proximity to an international airport, as well as a high quality of living.
