Galaxy S7 Edge torture tests shows how the phone stands up to abuse

When you drop lots of money on a new smartphone, it's understandable that you want to know how durable the device is and how well it will stand up to your daily grind. A video has been published to YouTube that puts the Samsung S7 Edge through bend, burn, and scratch tests. The first test we see is the scratch test looking at how well the screen of the smartphone stands up to scratching.

The tester uses picks that he says are of different hardness to test scratch resistant properties. He says that normal smartphone screens are in the 4-5 range for hardness, the S7 Edge starts to scratch at a hardness of 6 and scratches significantly at a hardness of 7. On the back of the smartphone, the glass cover over the camera lens resisted scratching with a sharp box opener knife.

The plastic cover over the top of the flash and heart rate sensor didn't fare well though and scratched with very little effort. The sides of the device are made from aluminum and when scratched with the side of the box cutter, the device doesn't significantly chip or cut, but little slivers of metal or paint do come off. The back of the smartphone is easier to scratch than the front glass.

The box cutter leaves light scratches on the surface with little effort whereas the box cutter leaves no marks behind on the screen glass. The flame tests show that the screen turns white where the flame touches and never returns to normal. Flames aren't a big hazard for smartphones so this test isn't such a big deal to most of us. The manual bend test shows that bending the front screen area is tough, but when bent the other direction the back case separated from the frame leaving the phone susceptible to water damage.
