'Furious 7' movie sets new box office record

Furious 7, the latest movie in the Fast and Furious franchise, has set a new box office record, according to NBCUniversal. The new flick now holds the record for how fast it hit the $1 billion mark in worldwide box office grosses — it did so in 17 days — beating out some other big-name films. It also broke a new record for the studio, as well, which says this is its first movie to hit such a level of success during its first round in theaters.

NBCUniversal made the announcement on Friday, saying that on that day (April 17), Furious 7 was in the pipeline to hit the $1 billion mark in worldwide box office sales, something it did reach, making it the #1 film to reach the milestone in 17 days' time.

Likewise, it is Universal's latest bragging right, being its first time in 103 years that it saw this kind of success from a movie on its first run. Universal also says this is the first "franchise of its kind" that has exceeded $3.39 billion.

Said NBCUniversal Vice Chairman Ron Meyer, "On behalf of all of us, I am incredibly proud of the motion picture team at Universal, the cast and filmmakers of the FAST & FURIOUS for all they have done to take our original idea and evolve it into a huge, global, blockbuster franchise."
