Fortnite High Stakes and v5.40 downtime schedule revealed

Epic Games originally intended to release its new "The Getaway" LTM and High Stakes event today with the v5.40 Fortnite update. However, yesterday the company revealed that it had to postpone the update to later this week due to a "critical controller issue." We've known in the hours since that the update will arrive on Thursday and now we know the exact arrival time.

Fortunately, Epic is still on schedule to release the update tomorrow, September 6, which means the controller issue has been fixed. In a tweet earlier today, the company revealed that it'll release Fortnite version 5.40 with the High Stakes update at 4AM ET / 1AM PT tomorrow morning.

Once available, players will experience downtime, then need to download and install the update to continue playing. Upon relaunching the game, a new jewel heist mode called "The Getaway" will be present; in it, players are tasked with retrieving one of four jewels from special Supply Drops.

The first four teams to acquire these jewels from Supply Drops and escape in getaway vans will win the match. It won't be easy, though, as squads will be battling with each other to get the jewel first.

Joining the High Stakes update will be new skins featuring a white suit and four face mask options, each styled after playing cards. As with all LTMs, "The Getaway" will only be available for a limited period of time before disappearing.
