Fortnite has a stealthy sea monster with a castle on its back

When the end of Season 8 resulted in a molten rock slamming into Polar Peak's iceberg, Fortnite players anticipated the start of a major event, but didn't know what to expect beyond that. Soon after Season 9 arrived, the Polar Peak iceberg started shuddering and blasting ice out its massive fissures, indicating the blast had caused a hibernating creature to stir. That monster, it turns out, is a sea monster.

Days after the Polar Peak iceberg started shaking, some players noticed a large round eyeball watching them through the ice. That sighting confirmed that a creature lied within the ice, spurring speculation that it may have been a dragon. The assumption was logical given the dragon eggs that had been located in the castle, but it was ultimately incorrect.

The creature is a large sea monster, players have discovered, and it is now swimming around the island's coastline. If you watch the ocean around the battle royale island, you may spot what appears to be a small speck in the distance. That, the video below reveals, is the sea monster with the Polar Peak castle firmly on its head.

It's a fun addition to the game, but it's unlikely that Epic has it swimming around just for the fun of it. Players anticipate the sea monster playing a role in some future event -- it may make its way inland via the lagoon, for example, or it may be used to create a new point of interest using the castle.

For now, at least, the sea monster is content swimming around the ocean; you can attempt to spot it by standing on a high point, such as the mountain near Frosty Flights, and scanning the watery horizon. It doesn't appear the sea monster gets close to the island, but that may change in the future.
