First Blair Witch gameplay trailer is even creepier than we expected

Strangely enough, one of the big surprises to come out of E3 2019 wasn't a major AAA release, but rather the reveal of a new horror game based on the insanely popular found-footage flick The Blair Witch Project (and its less insanely popular sequels). Simply dubbed Blair Witch, the game was revealed during Microsoft's E3 2019 press conference, and ever since then, horror fans have been waiting to see more. Today, developer Bloober Team delivered, giving us the first gameplay trailer for the title.

Though it's a gameplay trailer, we don't really see a whole lot of gameplay variety. The trailer mostly consists of the player character, Ellis, and his dog walking through the increasingly creepy woods the Blair Witch is said to inhabit. As he does, he chats on the phone with a woman named Jess, giving us a window into how deeply disturbed he becomes as he investigates the disappearance of a local boy.

The game is actually set in 1996, two years after the events of The Blair Witch Project. At this point, it isn't clear if Blair Witch is set in the same timeline as The Blair Witch Project, or if it's completely unrelated to the story, but regardless, the main point is clearly that the Blair Witch is still horrifying and clearly not something to be trifled with.

If Blair Witch sounds like something that's right up your alley, the good news is that you don't have to wait very long to play it. The game will be out on PC and Xbox One on August 30th, a little more than four weeks from today. That's a pretty quick turnaround time for a game that was first revealed at E3 2019.

Blair Witch is currently up for pre-order on Steam, the Xbox Store, and GOG.com. Hopefully we'll see some more trailers and gameplay footage before the game launches next month, so stay tuned for more.
