Fire Phone RIP: Amazon runs out of stock

Have you been holding out, hoping to buy Amazon's Fire Phone for even cheaper than the lowered prices from January? Well, it looks like you've missed your chance, as Amazon's biggest flop in recent history is completely sold out in both the 32GB and 64GB configurations. The Fire Phone is listed as out of stock, with Amazon's standard message of not knowing "if or when" the product will be available again. But we all know the truth, there's no way more are being manufactured.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to GeekWire that all Fire Phone inventory from the US and around the globe has been sold. She didn't directly confirm that the unpopular device would never be sold again, but the signs are all there. Amazon recently laid off a number of employees from the division that developed the phone, hinting that any plans for a successor have been cancelled.

The Fire Phone saw a painful consumer rejection following a big launch by Amazon. It launched at a price of $199 with a two-year contract on AT&T, but was later reduced to just $0.99. Similarly, the unlocked price started at $649, but in January was slashed down to $189.

Amazon certainly isn't giving up on hardware altogether, however. The company seems to have found success with its Echo Bluetooth speaker and virtual assistant. It's also continuing to sell its Fire HD tablet, along with Kindle e-readers, and the newly launched Dash Buttons that order a household product with just a press.
