Facebook unveils site for second European data center

Facebook is planning to build a second data center in Europe, and it has just announced the eventual site: Clonee, Meath County, Ireland. This will be the social network's first ever data center in Ireland; the company's current and only European data center is in Sweden. Alongside the news comes a render of what the planned data center will look like once it is constructed.

This will officially be known as the "Clonee" data center, and according to Facebook it will be "packed full of cutting-edge technology" to become one of the world's most sustainable and efficient advanced data centers. As well, the data center will be powered entirely from renewable energy.

The renewable energy will come from Ireland's wind generation efforts, and is part of the social network's overall goal of powering half of its entire infrastructure from renewable and clean sources by 2018. Says Facebook, it also plans to have all the hardware components of the data center, including servers and racks, designed and built from scratch.

The designs and construction will be done as part of the Open Compute Project, something that will ultimately result in a growth of open source efficient infrastructure for companies to implement. Check out the timeline below for more Facebook news!
