Facebook mobile Highlights feature aggregates the notable

In the newly released iOS 7.0 app update, Facebook silently slipped in a new feature under the new People tab called "Highlights". The feature does what it says: it highlights notable things from among your account and your friends' activity, surfacing to the top pending friends requests, Life Events, and more.

It seems the "Requests" tab has been turned into the "People" tab for select iOS users, and under it are a variety of sub categories also provided as tabs: Highlights, History, and Everyone. Highlights is of particular interest, first showing users friend requests they mightn't be aware of.

From there, Highlights shows off friends that have birthdays, Life Events that have recently taken place, "People You've Contacted," which is essentially self-explanatory, and "People You May Know", which those who use the Web variety will be familiar with, surfacing new people you might want to friend.

The idea behind it seems to be truncating the News Feed so that users can quickly browse through the most important recent details, sans endless pictures of babies and banal statuses that would otherwise get in the way. Whether this feature will eventually find its way to all mobile users or will fizzle into the unknown, never officially acknowledged, is yet to be seen.
